Seattle Green Spaces Coalition

Seattle Green Spaces Coalition was formed in 2014 by Seattle neighbors who appreciate green spaces as places of natural beauty and wildlife habitat in their neighborhoods.

The mission of SGSC is to re-purpose City property as parks, green spaces, or for other uses consistent with the City’s environmental goals.

During 2014, SGSC developed an extensive outreach network consisting of hundreds of individuals and numerous organizations.
We educated people about the value of green space, the underutilization and availability of “surplus” property, and the advocacy process.
We provided over 800 signatures in the forms of petitions, letter and emails to City Council, resulting in the unanimous adoption by the City Council of a “Statement of Legislative Intent” for the creation of an Open Space Opportunity Fund.

Our Strategic Plan for 2015 is three-fold:

to provide a counterpoint to the “Statement of Legislative Intent” to ensure that the governmental process is robust
to deepen our outreach and education network in order to serve as a “voice” for the many individuals, neighborhoods, and organizations supporting green space goals
to create an analysis and inventory of “surplus” properties including their public benefits and ecosystem services.SGSC is a Washington State non-profit corporation managed by a Steering Committee of nine Seattle community members

We meet twice per month at public libraries throughout Seattle.

Seattle's Green Environment is slowly being diminished - Our Parks, Trees, Grass Lands, Wetlands, Flowering Shrubs, and every part of our Green Canopy need to be actively preserved, protected and enhanced for the benefit of not only we who are here now, but for our children, grandchildren, nieces, and nephews who follow in our footsteps.
